The other day my group of friends were talking about some girl and one of them showed us as a picture of her boyfriend, who is a tanned asian, and some commented on how much he looked like an ape, among other things. I'm just shocked. They were so casual about it too. When did things come to this

Come to this? Uh, hate to disappoint you but we never left "this"--there've always been people like that and there will continue to be people like that for the foreseeable future, sadly enough.

Sad but true... People are always going to be hateful and ignorant, but it seems like things are changing so even if people like that will always exist, at least they won't be the majority.

I have heard many instances of it being a race thing with black people but not with Asian people. Not saying it's not, I'd just never heard of it.

since there is a history of demonizing other races by stating they're "less evolved" or "closer to animals" it's best not to do primate comparisons whatsoever

that's shitty. I also had a friend like this and his casualness about it was really surreal and disturbing. maybe you could confront them about it, one-on-one?

at best they might see their error, at worst you at least know whether they don't want to be racist. lots of racists are smart enough to know what they can get away with in social situations, but racist people who might be able to change at least don't identify as racist.
