Body positive movement. Great in theory, but in reality mostly practiced by overweight women. Now that 40% of US women are obese, that's not really something that should be accepted and encouraged, because that's just a horrifying statistic.

The problem with this is that multiple studies have shown that shaming overweight people only makes them gain more weight. As such, body positivity might have a beneficial effect on health - though you'd do much better to encourage physical activity, the accessibility of healthy foods, etc.

Though take heart: childhood obesity rates are dropping for the first time in a century in the US, and teenage-early adult obesity rates are now stable (also for the first time). Whether it's body positivity or increased awareness of the serious health issues, who knows.

Health At Any Size is a crock of shit, though. No, you can't be normal-height adult and be 500lbs and be healthy. You cannot. You can't be 50lbs, either.

I agree with all of this. In fact, I can speak to the shaming part. It actually makes it harder to lose weight when people are watching everything you put in your mouth, or sneer when you buy something stereotypically "bad for you". I mean, I'm 50+ pounds in to an eventual 200 pound weight loss. But all people see is that I'm fat. And I'll still be overweight-according-to-BMI when I reach my goal weight, but that's all right. At least I won't be super obese anymore.

Which leads in to, I think the "Health At Any Size" movement started out in the right place (aka Tilda Swinton and Brigitte Nielsen are both beautiful, healthy women. Just completely different body types. And that's okay.), but it's just gone completely off the rails.

You are awesome, losing 50 lbs is a big accomplishment. Congrats! :)

It's gone off the rails on Tumblr, and in similar hypersensitive online echo chambers.

In most real-world spaces, it's still about taking the steps you can to eat healthier, be more active, and improve your overall physical condition, and about focusing on that rather than weight loss, since watching the scale is a lot more likely to make people give up when that needle doesn't drop at a rate that reflects the effort they feel they put in.

Well there's actually some evidence that people in the overweight (but not obese) range have some health benefits over people in the normal range: they're more likely to survive critical illnesses, they're more fertile (if female), last longer in bed (if male), etc., and can be in very good physical condition.

They're also more likely to survive and recover reasonably well from a heart attack, which could probably fit under the critical illness umbrella, but is particularly interesting in a climate where one of the things most frequently used to concern troll overweight people is heart health.

This! I think people really don't get that shaming people doesn't encourage them. IMO, mostly the body positivity movement is about not shaming people, because no matter their size or health level, people deserve respect because they're people. If an obese person loses weight, they aren't suddenly worthy of your respect, they always were, now they are just healthier.

Maybe I'm more cynical but...I think it's more that they desperately want to believe their sneering and judging is doing something good or helping someone (tough love), or somehow necessary.

You're more optimistic than me. I think most of them just want someone to look down on in order to feel better about themselves, an dress it up as "tough love" because that plays better than "I'm a judgmental, insecure buttsniff".

I think you might be fudging that figure a bit. 40%?

Nope. 40%.
