Re: Well-intentioned social movements that annoy you

I honestly hate the "worse than death" thing cause like, it implies that being raped is something you can absolutely never recover from, can never heal from, can never deal with. And that is not the message I think most traumatized people need.

I've talked about it on here a couple of times before, but it bears repeating: I was raped, and while it was awful at the time, I healed and moved on-- apparently too quickly for most people. I had people getting angry that I was okay, insisting that I was utterly broken and "stuffing it down" and all of that. It was that reaction that traumatized me, and it's something I'm still working through in therapy.

So, thank you, thank you, thank you for being one of the few voices of reason that understands that it isn't always a life-ending thing, and in no case should you ever treat a survivor as though it's ruined them.

It's so ironic you were given shit for having a better-than-expected experience.

I'm sorry that happened.

Yes, that is a really good point too.

It's a terrible thing to do and that should not be minimized. But you can avoid minimizing something while still emphasizing that recovery is possible.

I mean it would be like saying "it's nbd if you get cancer" versus saying "you will DEFINITELY DIE if you get cancer"; the truth is different from either of those things. Everyone wants to avoid cancer (and if cancer were a thing people could do to each other, it would be a terrible crime). Emphasizing recovery is still really important.
