I definitely thought the gal on the right was a dude until I read "lesbians"

that's cool art though

maybe I should get into this series, I hear good things about it. how's the manga vs the anime?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-10 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Manga vs anime comes down to personal preference, mostly. The manga is further along in the storyline, but there's some very weird stuff that happens for no reason and the art is crap, especially in the beginning. The anime is flashier and more attractive with a kickass soundtrack, but the pacing could use some work and some people really dislike Mikasa's "lip gloss."

Mikasa's "lip gloss."

I've seen the show and have no idea what this means.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but in the manga her mouth is just a line, in the anime, she clearly has lips that are occasionally pictured with a glossy sheen. it's prettier and that offends the fuck out of the manga elitists.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
god forbid the anime give mikasa a mouth that she can emote with.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
It offends anyone with half a brain because it looks like she is wearing makeup which completely goes against her character. Inb4 hurr durrr women in the military care about their looks too. Yes, they do, but not Mikasa, Isayama confirmed that she doesn't use any makeup.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It literally doesn't look like she's wearing makeup. And I don't wear makeup, so I can tell. It's okay if you hate the anime for not being the manga. Just say that. Don't make up (no pun intended) stupid reasons.

I'm like years behind on the manga now but I did read quite a bit past where the first season of the anime left, and honestly, they are pretty identical. The pacing in the anime is better (some events are rearranged/trimmed) and the music is pretty great. But the anime is... just one season and the manga is so, so much further. The manga art style is called a bit messy and unskilled by many critics, but I personally kind of think the rough style suits the story, so meh.

All in all though, at least as far as the first anime season goes, they are more or less the same thing.

>The pacing in the anime is better
Are you fucking kidding me. The pacing in the anime is atrocious, it stretches every scene out until breaking point. Remember the boulder arc, the pacing was so fucking bad that it even became a meme. Even people who didn't read the manga noticed it.

Both versions of AoT have big flaws, for the Manga it's the art and for the anime it's the awful drawn out pacing. I'd say it's better to have mediocre art then awful pacing but that's just my opinion

That's fanart. The real manga art is hideous. As you might be able to tell, I prefer the anime, but unfortunately it follows the manga so closely that it has no real ending, and it's been years without any signs of a second season.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
The second season was already anounced for 2017

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
In addition to what everyone else said, the anime gave more screentime to popular characters (Levi) and changed the characters of some scenes because apparently they want to include more potential romance.
They also ruined a reveal in the end, but depending on how they pick it back in the second season it may not be such a big deal.

Also, avoid all the ovas except Ilse no techou. That one is plot relevant, the rest are a fanservicy mess, just like that school AU anime.

The anime is a pretty faithful adaptation. If you don't want to read subtitles, the dub is really well done to. There are few things the anime does better. It's mostly sequential and doesn't do a lot of the weird flashbacks that the manga does. The art in the manga is a little clunky in the beginning, and everything about the anime is pretty gorgeous. There is added romance and a few character changes in the anime that I find annoying, but not anything major. The anime does kind of exacerbate the bad pacing the manga has.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not who you replied to, but I read the manga pretty quickly and watched the anime, I can't really remember what's different - which romances are added and which characters were changed?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
There was a definite emphasis on Eren/Mikasa in the anime that isn't in the manga. Sometimes is was simply them switching Mikasa and Armin's positions (in the manga Armin was the one who pulled Eren out of his titan and Armin was the one crouching in Eren's bed). Or changing a line like when Eren is finally balancing in 3DM gear. In the anime it's "so Eren doesn't have leave Mikasa" and in the manga it's something like "Ha. I don't have to stick with you anymore." They also had a few added scenes.

I think the biggest character that is change in the anime is Annie. A lot of her scenes with Eren were cut and her breakdown at the end was changed (yes, I know Isayama approved of that change, but still).

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
They added some Levi/Petra moments that weren't in the manga.

I think they turned Hange into a bit of a caricature and cut some of her screen time.

The biggest change was with the capture of Annie.

Really depends on what you're looking for. I'm one of those people who vastly prefers the manga to the anime. There was just enough fanservice and just enough personality changing with some of my favorite characters in the anime that it pissed me off. The anime is visually superior though, no doubt.

Rather than going into a long rant about it, I'll just say this: what I love about the manga is it doesn't follow the shounen formula to a T. The anime at times feels like it really wants to go back to that formula. It's also guilty of trying to be more edgy and takes itself more seriously.

Though I do still love the anime because it's still less formulamatic than most out there.
