ha, I was actually thinking about this recently! I'm torn on it. On one hand, it would have been good character development for Aang for sure, and the last-minute energybending thing was super deus-exy. On the other hand, the plot was pointing towards him finding a way out of it, and I like the message that you don't have to kill people to save the day or find justice. It's also a good development of Aang's character, just in a different direction. He's extremely committed to his ideals.

I guess my only big problem is the last-minute energybending fix. If that had been something he'd either known or been trying to learn throughout the series, it would have been better.

Of course, LoK sort of throws all that aside by illustrating that you can keep benders in prison for years if you use the right prison. It seems very expensive though. I've wondered why they didn't just kill the Red Lotus especially since capital punishment is apparently meted out for far lesser crimes in the water tribes...

ETA: also, your secret is partially incorrect. With his bending gone, it was no more dangerous to keep him in prison than any other nonbending soldier (perhaps less so, since he's not used to fighting without bending).

I would argue that even without his bending Ozai was dangerous. He was a leader powerful enough to convince the religious authorities to make the Phoenix King. His people were on the brink of winning a very long, and undoubtedly expensive, war. His successor was a teenager who had been wandering the earth for the better part of several years, and who nobody (or at least very few people) really knew. Ozai was still a political liability.

I would argue that his power and influence had a lot to do with his bending, though, especially if local religious authorities were involved.

Like I told Philstar...I need to re-watch this xD;

Not sure what any of that has to do with keeping him in prison though. Well, it might not have been a good idea to keep him in a Fire Nation prison, so there's that...but a prison where he didn't hold any sway politically? Not a huge deal.
