As mentioned elsewhere Aang most assuredly killed (at the very least when he was sinking battleships at the battle of the North Pole, and we'll be generous and only count the ones he sunk while not possessed by the spirit of the Ocean)... So on that note the lengths he goes to spare Ozai might be seen as hypocritical.

But I don't think it's ever unjust to spare someone; I can see why it might be dangerous especially in a monarchy, but with Ozai stripped of his powers that's potentially a worse punishment than death.

but with Ozai stripped of his powers that's potentially a worse punishment than death.

In that case, doesn't that make Aang the world's biggest asshole?

I suppose that depends on your metric? Again the lengths he went to to keep Ozai alive could be considered hypocritical... on the other hand, I don't exactly have a problem with him trying to spare a single combatant while sinking battleships, cause either way he was trying to minimize the loss of life (I just wish he'd have acknowledged that there was already some blood on his hands, and not been so smug about his track record).

But is he an asshole for taking away Ozai's powers when Ozai might consider that a worse punishment? No I don't think so, killing someone precludes the chance of reformation.

I was merely commenting that someone who clearly values power (both political and personal) above all else might prefer to die a king than live on as a prisoner. But I don't think obliging them makes your less of an asshole.

Right. Because a mass-murdering psychopath is totally going to reform.

I think it makes you more of an asshole to inflict unnecessary and permanent damage on someone who needs to go down, rather than kill them quickly and humanely.

To me, Aang is the worst kind of sociopath. He'll literally rape your soul and then claim he's being merciful and morally upstanding.

Well Aang was a child who was shown a way to avoid doing something he didn't want to do by a being that is possibly older than the Avatar Cycle itself (assuming it's one of the same Rock Turtles we see in Korra), the fact that he apparently only used that technique one other time makes me think he's not a sociopath and did (after doing it) understand to some extent the weight of it.

And I agree the chances of Ozai reforming are nil... but I think bringing him to trial is preferable than killing (though if Aang couldn't safely bring him in killing would be totally justified), and that I'm not a fan of capital punishment.

To me that was one of the reasons I couldn't stand him. His entire character is built on running away from shit he didn't want to do. And when other people pay the price for his bullshit, he can't even tell them he's sorry.

Trust me, I combed through the transcripts of every fucking episode and the words "I'm sorry" never left his mouth. That, to me, indicates he's a sociopath. Nothing is ever his fault.
