I watched it as a kid because it was on after Fox Kids so I can't remember if it was socially progressive or regressive. I remember the woman actually identified as male, or something, though?

Well, shut it off and find some other show to watch then. I know it can be quite shocking to realize that shows we grew up watching are "problematic" but you just got to deal with it. It happened, nothing you can do about it but move on if it bothers you that much.
