I get really tired of fictional drugs that are all, 'oh no, you take it once and it's got you forever and if you try to stop taking it you die' or w/e. It's just so damn lazy, y'know? Own your shitty PSA, dude.

It's not really used as a PSA, just as one more element in a really shitty society. It's only ever touched on briefly, mainly as background.

I mean, the closest to PSA ever it comes is having the pretty doctor from a rich family be able to be a functional addict because she has resources street addicts don't.

It's mostly lazy worldbuilding, I think, TBH. She could be a functional addict without the drug being *as* addictive in the first place.
