That's the part that came across as racist to me. It's like saying Harry Potter's eyes are supposed to be green but they cast Daniel Radcliffe and that movie does fine. It trivializes the issue by picking a very superficial cosmetic detail.

"I don't think it's such a bad thing that mixed race marriages are illegal. I mean, bestiality is illegal too and you don't hear people complaining about that." Is obviously not an attempt to just pick a 'random' law, it's obviously implying a connection between bestiality and mixed race marriages that's worthy of comparison, AND it derails because it's basically begging the person to get distracted by arguing how it's a bad comparison instead of sticking to their original argument. As a writer she should be very aware of that writing technique and it's doubtful she would use it incorrectly if she's any kind of a decent writer.
