If it interferes with your enjoyment of the show, then drop it. I think storylines you don't like are a perfectly valid reason to quit a show and that includes NOTPs becoming canon. The point is entertainment and if it's not entertaining you then its not worth your time. That said, you don't need a reason to stop watching any more than you need a reason to watch. It doesn't matter if it seems "petty" or "shallow." If people ask why you quit, just say you didn't have the time or you had been falling behind and realized you had been losing interest.
