"the appeal of something" =/= "why people like it"

The appeal is the draw. It's the reason why people get into something. People can like Hamilton for a million reasons, but I seriously doubt it would have gotten the following it did if it had been touted as "another historical musical".

nayrt - I'd watch Hamilton out of curiosity but since I'm not usually a fan of musicals, I don't really know how many historical musicals there are. I'd probably be more interested in them simply because I like history.

It's a somewhat sizable subgenre of musical theater, some more rigorous than others. The best one has to be 1776, which has both a terrific book *and* score.
