When did this happen?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-13 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
It seems like there used to be a handful of named users here who identified as asexual, and some anons (I'm guessing; it's hard to know how many when they're anon) and in general most people were cool about it when the subject was brought up.

Now it seems like anytime anyone mentions it there are a ton of people giving them shit about it, and the named users that used to identify that way are all "I used to think I was asexual too, but then I realized I wasn't, so therefore it's not possible for anyone else to be, either" and I'm just really wondering when the hell that happened?

This used to be pretty much the only place I felt comfortable mentioning my sexuality because people, minus the occasional obvious troll, were overall accepting but now that people here are acting just like everyone everywhere else, it's making me really sad. :(

I am not asexual but my partner is and I have seen what you mean too
I mean idk about the named users (I don't keep up with anyone much) but there is more negativity about it in general
there are still quite a few ace anons popping around making it not all terrible, but this place can be... super hit or miss about that. I generally avoid most threads on it

ayrt

I just don't know where it came from. I don't know if people are trolling more because things are less active than they used to be, or if there's a whole new group of anons now or what. I don't know how to explain the named users, unless I'm confusing people who have similar icons or something.

Whatever the reasoning, it's disappointing. I mean, I can go to plenty of other places on the internet and hear how asexuality isn't real, so it really sucks to hear it here, too, especially when it used to not be like that.

That might have been part of my doing. I think I said something along the lines that it'd be good to check out any underlying causes for a low sex drive first (like depression, thyroid issues, medication) before taking up the asexual label because that was what happened in my case. (Thought I was asexual for seven some years and turns out, nah, I was just really depressed.) And looks like that caught on.

I do think it's a legit label, though, and figure people know their own identity better than I do. It's just a good idea to check out symptoms of relatively common medical issues first.

People got sick of aces whining that they're ~so oppressed~, just like LGBT people.

Oh man, I didn't really notice the shift but that is fucking gross, my friend. I'm sorry.

(I know this sucks but I gotta throw in that I'm another person who used to think I was, but it turned out untreated depression just shot my sex drive through the basement. HOW EVER, because of that time, if anything I've become even more vocal about how it is ABSOLUTELY A THING and just because it wasn't the case for me, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I am here for you. Everyone is different, anon, and some people experience life in some ways and others in another. It's all normal.)

I have a possibly irrational annoyance with 'demisexuals' that has in the past manifested in some mean comments. I know I was being an asshole but I'm still not really that sorry, and I'm still annoyed.

Asexuality though I've never had a problem with. I do recall some threads where asexuals were accused of faking oppression, and I don't agree with those.
