serious question: what is the advantage of a mac over a pc? like, are there things that macs do better? because all i ever hear is how this and that program won't run properly on a mac so I honestly can't understand why anyone would want one, especially considering how expensive they are and how you can't customize them.

They have much better virus protection* and generally run a lot of creative software. It's sort of more of a niche item. Some people also prefer the aesthetic.

*This is an advantage of some, but not an enormous amount, of value. People can be duped into thinking their Macs are completely invulnerable, so they take no precaution and get blindsided by something awful.

They don't have better virus protection, it's that no one really makes viruses for them because of how small the userbase is. Less viruses is not better protection.

+1. This, exactly. It's actually how widespread the OS is that determines whether virus writers target it. Macs have always been a niche market, so they're usually large enough to warrant writing viruses. That being said, there was an Apple-targeted attack maybe a year or two ago? Apple argued it was more user error exploit than a classic virus, but Apple also trained their users to think that they couldn't get viruses. If you go on the Internet, you can get viruses, and get phished, etc. etc.

but what creative software can they run that a pc can't? i know adobe makes all of their stuff for pc and those are pretty much the industry standard when it comes for things like design afaik.

Honestly, I take peoples' word for that, since I"m about the most uncreative person I know. So that might not be perfectly true.

No surprises there.

They can carry viruses and you can infect another computer while moving files from an infected Mac to that computer. The Mac seems fine because the viruses aren't written to affect it's OS, but they're still lurking in there, waiting to be dumped onto your friend's PC.

Personally, I just find their interface a lot easier to use.

cygwin blows, not sure how the new ubuntu layer under MSWin is these days.

Trendy and more expensive, which will always mean "better" in some peoples' view.

They work. You plug them in and they work. Almost all of the "Well, we don't know why that crashed" "Oooh, yeah, looks like you need to install several more components for that to work" "I think the components you installed are conflicting with the software that worked fine yesterday" problems just DON'T HAPPEN.

You serious? My boyfriend has done nothing but complain about the problems his mac has, problems he never had on PC.
