meh, disagree. The first book is wonderful, the second one is fairly good. I agree the third one is the best, but as the series goes on and tries to get darker, it gets worse. 5, 6 and 7 are just messes. The first three have the most charm by far.

I think the first two are great childrens books but as an adult (who's read a lot of childrens and YA and doesn't have any hang ups about those genres) I found them... adequate. As you say, charming, but not amazing, and not particularly original if you've read a significant amount of British childrens/YA fantasy. PoA is where the story gets a little meatier, as if Rowling has made a conscious decisions to write for a wider audience. GoF expands upon that, but needs editing. Then each subsequent book is longer and more complicated, which means the lack of editing is more conspicuous.
