since every character in One Piece has a tragic backstory full of parents, siblings, mentors, friends, and other loved ones dying, I'd say taken as a whole they all even out to illustrate how brutal the world really is. and, no one has the market cornered on tragedy when everyone has tragedy in their histories. this is a good thing for the story.

that said, Portgas D. Ace. His death is awful but I wouldn't have the story without it.
