I'm not sure if I've ever heard him speak in his normal accent but given where he's from, he's probably trying not to sound so Geordie.

I read it was because he's used the American accent for so long in SOA it's mangled his original accent into the tortuous US/UK hybrid it is today.

(...that rhyme though.)

That IS strange. At first he sounds like he's trying to do a sort of... New York accent? And then occasionally it sounds slightly Australian, then British...
