Huh. I wonder why Hispanics don't want representation that looks like them?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody does. Everyone wants an idealized version of themselves.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe, just maybe, not all Hispanics look like Americans think they do?

There's also the whole issue about (lack of) cultural/racial identity in Latin America, but I guess that's too complex for people who believe Latino/Hispanic is a race.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Good point. Race issues are very important in the US because we're so bad with them. I won't date say color issues don't occur elsewhere but they're different elsewhere. If anything, the US is at an advantage because we don't sweep them under the rug.

Well, firstly, it's not that simple.

1) The lighter skinned woman also "looks like them", because we're talking about a population with a wide range of skin/hair/eye colors.

2) You may have noticed that most cultures have super idealized versions of themselves cast in prominent TV/movie roles. When's the last time you saw an American film starring a flatchested size 14-16 woman who has merely okay hair and cellulite? Or an action movie starring a heavyset dude with thinning hair (except for on his back) and a beer gut instead of a six-pack?

AYRSt

I guess that's why this is a secret, then? I dunno, I thought all women hated seeing pretty white women in media. They bitch about it all the time.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Wanting some diversity in media /=/ hating all white women.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say they hated all white women. I said they hated seeing pretty white women in media. Learn to read, idiot.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lol somebody's cranky.
Maybe you shouldn't make such stupid generalations in the first place sweetums. :)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
0/10. If you're not a troll and want people to take you seriously, you're going to have to lose some of that sneery "it's all those durn tootin' feminists' fault!" chip on your shoulder.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Psst... no one on this comm is going to take me seriously, anyway, because I don't subscribe to the SJW hivemind mentality.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
F!S, the SJW hivemind? Bwahahahahaaaa pull the other one!

Because Hispanic is not a race. There are people with all kinds of origins living in Latin America, some are descendants of native people, some of black slaves, some of European origin, and some are mixed.

During colonial times, the rulers were European, so their type of beauty was the most important, and that continued until now. Rich people are usually light skinned. Most people in entertainmet tv, telenovelas and talk shows, are light skinned. Native people are poor ignorant outcasts, so nobody wants to look like them. The more European you look like, the prettier you are considered. =/

So the poor ignorant outcasts don't want to see people who look like them on TV because... they're too ignorant and brainwashed by European beauty standards to know better?

Hispanic population doesn't "look like" any one particular person. There's a very wide spectrum of skin tones that are common.
