yeah, I read about that one of the cop pages I follow on Facebook. My heart breaks for that poor child.

Not directly violent--he was part of a group of eight people who were trying to recruit "jihadists" to fight in Pakistan. The leader got eight years; he got three. He blamed his time spent with the group, saying "It's like someone who lives 24 hours a day with thieves. Automatically, he too will become a thief!" http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36526067

Even after his release, his police file was flagged as a potential security threat. He was under surveillance, including a wiretap on his phone.

I'm loath to suggest more surveillance or restrictions on private individuals, especially since just looking at jihadist websites can get you flagged, but it seems like the current system didn't do anything to prevent this.
