Fanfic - edited version

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ever edit other people's fanfic or fanart for your own personal use? Let's say there's a fic you would love otherwise, buuut the subplot is awful or it includes a character you can't stand. Do you ever remove that stuff and save the edited version (but not post it anywhere, of course)?

I do.

No, thought that's a great idea.

I only edit them in my head. D:

I used to do that at first, but editing the fics for real made rereading them a lot more enjoyable.

You should make this into a secret, nonny. :)

Only once.

Someone wrote a whole series of really quite good Age of Sail fanfic, but put "bellow" where they meant "below". EVERY SINGLE TIME. "Go bellow." "Told him to go bellow." So distracting. I saved it and fixed it.

This genuinely made me LOL. Did anyone ever tell the author? I'd be so embarrassed if I did that.

No. Also wtf.

I guess that's not technically plagiarism if you're not publishing it or passing it off as your own work, but ngl, the fact that you do this bothers me deeply on some level.

I guess it's partly because I don't care that much when people do it to me. Quite a few of my fanarts have turned up edited or partly traced at some point or another, so if someone enjoyed themselves by making these changes, good for them, I suppose.

I would probably be really pissed if it turned out someone had plagiarized my fics. Luckily I haven't seen it happen yet, but ... man, I don't just spew out generic stuff. I put a lot of time and effort and thought into it.

I'd like to hope that it would be impossible for someone to just edit it all into something totally different, but I guess I can't be sure of that.

I used to occasionally download RPF, find+replace the names so it was about characters instead, and tuck in. :P

No, never occurred to me. If something bothers me about a fic I stop reading it.

Though I wonder, would some of the better-written suefics out there actually be tolerable if you find+replaced the Sue/Stu's name with the OTP half of your choice...

Re: Fanfic - edited version

It wouldn't to me. Maybe it's because I've read so many fics with blatant canon sue-ized characters but seeing that whole sue treatment with a canon character actually bothers me more than it does with OCs.

The only thing I do is occasionally find and replace names and/or pronouns.

That seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through for something I'm not going to share. In cases like that I just apply the good parts to my daydreams and leave the rest out.

No, but I should!

Re: Fanfic - edited version

I did this back when I found an author I liked for one of my favorite ships. She also wrote RPF fic for that ship's actors, but RPF severely freaks me out, so I would put her fic in a word document and find/replace all the names to be character names, then read those happily. (They were AU anyway and she used the same characterization. I later realized she wasn't a very good author but I was new to fandom at the time) I didn't save anything, though.

I occasionally edit, but only SPaG.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
And I have Ameri-picked a couple of times (Mum where I'm expecting Mom can really throw me out of a story), which I suppose kind of falls under SPaG, but I don't think of it the same way.

Re: Fanfic - edited version

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I once took a fic that I adored and edited for SPAG and epithets. I wanted to be able to reread it and love it, and not be distracted by errors and occasionally bad prose.

Re: Fanfic - edited version

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Lol I started doing that once...except it was an entire rewrite? The story has a place in my heart (as one of the first fics i read) but the characterization, writing, etc...atrocious. But the main plot was enjoyable, and the sexy times were forever ingrained into my mind. So i just went about rewriting the MCs, making the Sue less Sue-ish, but maintaining the main thread and memorable scenes.

I wish i had saved a copy of the fic.

But yeah, i figure as long as you keep it to yourself, you're fine.
