I don't see prima facie why Odinism is wrong (well, I mean, IIRC it's often sort of a white power thing, which is obviously wrong, but neo-paganism doesn't seem more obviously wrong than IE Wicca to me) and I definitely don't see the modern masculinity angle here

It is true that some neopagan movements in Scandinavia have definitely been linked to white power - there's actually history dating back to World War II and nationalism in Scandinavia with this. I'm sure you still have a few crazies today.

But yeah, generally speaking, neopaganism in Scandinavia does not equal white power movements. There's actually more serious attempts at organizing neopagan movements but more as the sort of free-thinking, spiritual-hippie, glorified atheist type of way. Even so, I do recall reading that Iceland is building a large modern day pagan "church" (temple, whatever), pretty cool.

Women practice as well? It's just a more Norse themed version of Paganism.

For what it's worth, the ones who say they're Odinists are usually less scary. It's the ones who call themselves Wotansvolk you really need to worry about.

That jibes with what I've seen. The latter tend to be on the neo-Nazi end of things.

I am so confused right about now, and the 10 seconds I spent on Google didn't clear anything up. So is this just another word for people who believe in Norse Mythology or is it something completely different? And why is it reserved only for males?

In my experience the people who believe in Norse Mythology are by far Neo Nazis, which is sad because it is such a big part of my cultural history. But they are not only men.

Try googling Nordic neopaganism instead.

It isn't reserved for males (there are actually practicing neopagans all over the world, many of whom are women!) but as with a lot of neopaganist movements, the practice has been co-opted by some neo-Nazi groups... basically as a breeding ground for extremism. This tactic seems to be more prevalent in Europe than in North America thus far.

In Russia there's an equivalent problem with Slavic neopaganism being used as a recruitment tool for ultranationalist paramilitary groups, which is where my focus of study was in undergrad lol.

It's really annoying, because I've already had a case f googling for Slavic myth/fairly tales, and suddenly ending up on the shady pages - like wtf, go away!

The modern female has their wicca neopaganism either their goddesses and womyn instead so I don't see a huge difference.
