[Kinda mild spoilers]

It is a little deeper than just calling him honky sometimes. Detta is part of a person with multiple personalities, and her Detta personality hates/fears white people. So she struggles against the two white characters and tries to murder them.

Her other personality is cooperative/friendly to the white characters.

I can see where it could pose some problems, but I think there are enough ways to deal with it that it shouldn't. Detta really wouldn't need a race-specific mistrust/hatred to motivate her to fight the two white characters. She's ornery as hell in general, and they dragged her to another dimension.

It's been a while since I read the book, but I really don't think the other characters being changed to black would make her cooperate with them.

People also seem to forget that Roland isn't the only white character, and Eddie is far far more of a stereotypical... I don't know how else to say this, "white guy asshole" than Roland, who hasn't necessarily been exposed to that kind of cultural crap.

I mean, when they revealed the casting I wondered about that too, but if they really wanted to they could shift Roland's share of the racial aspects of the conflict onto Eddie and I doubt it would change a damn thing.

There you go. Pretty easy fix.

I'm really looking forward to this.

It's a completely different dynamic, though. Eddie's never an authority figure like Roland is. He's another fish out of water Roland kidnapped and is barely along for the ride when Odetta/ Detta join the group. Not saying a work around isn't possible, but the white guys aren't really interchangeable in this case.
