Maybe I don't hang out in the places that sort of predator goes to look for victims. I post on places like feminist sites, so I usually see hate mobs and angry extremists, not power-hungry manipulators.

I'd say being the victim of a manipulator is worse than being the victim of a hate mob, but predators seem like they'd be easier to avoid if you've read about them and know how they operate. Hate mobs can wear you down through the volume and duration of comments even if you think you're immune.
