I have to agree with anon. You don't get pictures of the big bad choking the male heroes in a helpless pose - there's always an indicator of the male hero fighting back. Gritted teeth, more dynamic/action pose (in general, I can't bring a male hero being choked equivalent to mind). It's not that violence is happening, but how they've portrayed it (in this case, mystique) into a passive/helpless pose.

I find it distasteful too. Someone chose to make her passive in this picture. Which indicates to me that the movie will be similar and is a turn off. (Well ive already fallen off the xmen train. Too many movies for me! But this add wouldn't endear me to watching it)

Whereas my take is that I know the movie won't leave Mystique a passive bystander. Would I feel differently if this weren't such high-profile, fantastic franchise but rather an original drama or high-brow scifi? Probably. But it's not. I'm familiar with the franchise; I'm familiar with the characters; I'm familiar with the genre. And I think that's who the marketers are targeting.

That doesn't mean I don't see why people don't like it or would find it distasteful. But someone asked why that imagery would be stressed, which is what my contributions to this thread have been, excepting one admittedly kind of dickish comment.

I guess I disagree, as one of the former people it would have been targeted at/familiar with the franchise. I know that mystique probably does an amazing back flip and kicks him in the face. Possibly stabs him.

But this poster? Doesn't advertise any of that. It's generic, I find it distasteful and a turn off. It doesn't make me excited for the movie, it just reminds me of when they do fall short or portray characters in certain types of settings. And the advertising they choose dies make me wonder if the stuff I dislike will be more prevalent in this particular movie etc etc. so guess I'm also saying that if that's the type of portrayal being stressed I'm not keen on it. If that passive portrayal isn't in the movie or it's a split second - still not keen on it because it's the second they chose to put on a bill board...

Just rankles because of the disparity.

But my point is that showing Mystique backflipping all around and kicking him in the head doesn't make Apocalypse look like a threatening villain. And the point of the ad is to make you go "Oh, shit. This guy's going to be a challenge."

But I guess we're just talking about two separate issues here.

But she doesn't need to be so passive to indicate she's in serious trouble yknow? She's just hanging there and her face has minimal expression. A more dynamic pose where she's active but still overwhelmed could still highlight that he means business without harming his challenge level metre.

She doesn't need to be kicking him in the face - I was saying I know that's likely to happen. But she's not doing anything in this trailer and it is annoyingly typical. Like, have her leaning back. Have anger or frustration on her face. Have some dynamic angles going on.

Because this, he is just standing there holding her like a doll. It's all straight lines and passive poses. That doesn't strike me as being a challenging danger. It just looks like every other helpless heroine pose I have seen. I am not concerned for mystique, I am resigned to a token fight without any energy. Out of all the billboards I've seen she is the only one not fighting (and failing/desperate/emotional and the only one sharing the billboard with him)

Even this would be better because there's some emotion and fight in it.
