LOL

Well, it isn't Edo Eruikku or Royu Musutangu or anything like that is it? ...I thought there wasn't a 'v' sound in Japanese anyways.

Oh, and 42/55

42. Your secret is beautiful.

55. There is one!

[livejournal.com profile] ff_undressed :).

There isn't, as far as I know. I mean, they can write it in katakana, but for the most part they still have a hell of a hard time pronouncing it, so it just comes out as 'b' a lot when they end up saying in.

It irritates my friend because his name is Stephen, and it's really obnoxious to spell in katakana - he goes through the trouble of writing 've' even though it will ultimately just be pronounced as 'be' anyways.

[identity profile] svati-arcturus.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha I bet. But thanks for the info :).

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
ヴァ - va
ヴィ - vi
ヴ - vu
ヴェ - ve
ヴォ - vo

they're all based off the katakana for "u" which is ウ but i'm pretty sure they still pronounce it with a b sound, they just write it as this to be clear.

[identity profile] svati-arcturus.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, okay, that makes more sense. But there still isn't really the 'sound' so I guess my point is proven?

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
well most people can't pronounce the "v" sound, but even if people say it as "b~" doesn't mean that is how it is written (which would be the correct way i guess)

[identity profile] svati-arcturus.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah ha ha true, true. I don't know...*shrugshrug*.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I know for a fact they can't pronounce it...thats the reason Belldandy has her name instead of her real name - Verdandi or some variant. As for writing it...yeah, that was proven above.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they have no Japanese words that use the sound. But since there are loan words and foreign names, they have to have a katakana combination for it, and it's only used for "v".

And of course they can learn how to pronounce the letter. In D.Gray-man, for example, the voice actors were told to be very clear about pronouncing Lavi's name correctly.

[identity profile] svati-arcturus.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Kk, I see :). It makes quite a bit more sense now, but then again, I still think the OP is full of it.

...I wasn't trying to make it sound like the Japanese COULDN'T pronounce the letter if they wanted to, I just thought that the sound didn't exist, like the whole l/r thing and no 'x' and no 'q' etc etc.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Since I study Japanese full-time at university I'm a bit anal about these things, heh.

I just thought that the sound didn't exist, like the whole l/r thing and no 'x' and no 'q' etc etc.

It's a common misconception. It all depends on the katakana used, so it varies from case to case. You're right about l/r, though; one has to guess what it's supposed to be every time (though it's easier when the manga writer is obviously aiming for a known foreign name). And the only separate consonant they have is "n".
