For the actor to get from "I ran with the idea for a sitcom your colleague had" to "I fantasize about your colleagues' characters having sex with each other"? Wouldn't be the most logical step.

I'd agree... if she had been talking about porn.

So far, I don't think the fans have been given the actors a reason to believe that fanfiction can be anything other than slash.

Wasn't Sendhil asked about whether he knew of the Sylar/Mohinder slash fanfiction on that same day?

Yeah, I believe so.

So far, I don't think the fans have been given the actors a reason to believe that fanfiction can be anything other than slash.

Well, maybe. I wouldn't know. You may be quite right though, because the only conversations I've had with non-fandom people about fanfic tend to involve them getting confused when I point out that novels like Wicked and March are, in fact, fanfic ("but... they're real books!"). It's not entirely the fans' fault, though, because from what I've seen, whenever the media decides to focus on fanfic, they invariably go for slash and/or porn. I guess it just makes for a better story, even in fandoms where there is a reasonable amount of genfic.

But I don't think she was perpetuating the problem. The word "sitcom" hardly conjures up NC-17 images (or even slash images, though I guess the title might. But the actors came up with the title.)

Exactly, the actors came up with the name when they were joking around in an interview. They consciously chose to use the slash pairing name. The connection to slash fanfiction is there from the start.
Does it really have to be hardcore porn in order to be considered indecent to mention towards married men you hardly know? I don't know about your, but I would not walk up to, say, my parents' colleagues and tell them that I write stories about them living together as a gay couple. It's just something I don't do.

I'm not 100% sure the comparison is a perfect one (since it was in a specific context, not out of the blue, and since the story is about the characters rather than the actors), but it's a good question anyway. So I'll say that I think your scenario must actually happen to writers who base characters on people they know. The people in question would probably find it a little weird to think they were being used as the inspiration for a character or story, yeah, but the responses could vary. I'm sure some people would be entirely freaked out by the very thought, while some would probably be flattered.

Look, I'm not sure I'm disagreeing with you in general. I think it must be SO weird for the actors to know people think about their characters so much, whether it's through genfic, het, slash, or just plain old character analysis. I just think this particular story has been blown out of proportion, since it sounds to me like there was a specific context in which the topic was raised.

it was in a specific context, not out of the blue

The second time, yes. The first time was out of the blue, though, during the Q&A session.

the story is about the characters rather than the actors

In a way you are right that it's at least not RPS, but I would still be very cautious about this, because I can only guess about the actor/character relationship, and because we're talking about people who often refer to their characters as "I", and because of a lot of other feelings that I cannot articulate well right now.

When you picture Sylar and Mohinder together, you still picture Zach's and Sendhil's outward appearance, after all. And their pleasing outward appearance is one of Mylar's appeal, after all! (People obviously care about the pretty more than about proper characterization...)

And if it really was only about the characters, then why bring it up towards the actors? Why not to Tim Kring or Jeph Loeb etc? Why only the actors, who just so happen to look like Sylar and Mohinder?

The first time was out of the blue, though, during the Q&A session.

The secret wasn't about that, though. It's not what I was talking about.

And if it really was only about the characters, then why bring it up towards the actors? Why not to Tim Kring or Jeph Loeb etc?

I think people do (though I'd have to sift through various interviews to see if I'm right). It's just that no one usually organises dinners and Q&A times with people who aren't the actors, so there is a lot more fan/actor interaction than fan/production team. (Or at least, that's what gets more publicity.)

Re: 29

(Anonymous) 2008-03-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
See, I just cannot see dinner and Q&A as totally seperate. It's the repeated mentioning of slash that annoys me, personally.

And honestly, there have been interviews and Q&A's with Kring & Co. But you are right, the actors is what gets most publicity, because the actors is what interests people, and my question is: why?
And why do Mylar fangirls squee about Sendhil and Zach going to an event together arm in arm if they really strictly only fantasize about the characters, not the actors at all?

Re: 29

[identity profile] mylla.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I can't answer that, because I don't know and it creeps me out a bit too. But you did say (assuming you're the OP, sorry if I'm making that assumption and it isn't true) that this wasn't about what fangirls do in private, but rather in front of the actors. If you're trying to combat the deeper issue, fair enough, but the reason I responded here in the first place is because I became frustrated by the commenters who seemed to have gained an IMO inaccurate impression of what the girl in question did on that specific occasion.
