64 OP

Read my secret more carefully, and I think you'll find that I never said anywhere that not liking yaoi/yuri means that you're sexually repressed, or are a big fat liar.

Re: 64 OP

I've read it six or seven times now, three or four before I even commented, and I fail to see how it doesn't say that someone saying they don't like yaoi/yuri means they're sexually repressed. Because...that's...exactly what it says.

Re: 64 OP

[identity profile] rmarques.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, I must be reading a different secret, because to me, it says that if you feel the need to go around and say that you hate yaoi/yuri at every chance you have, in places where it may not even be on topic, or say, in your signature, and make a big deal on how "wrong" it is, or how much you hate it, the OP thinks you're sexually repressed.

Secret in a nutshell:

Quietly disliking something = Ok.

Loudly disliking something and even harassing people that do like it = You sure you're not trying to repress something?

THANK YOU.

Re: 64 OP

[identity profile] rejects.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry but I read nothing in that secret regarding harassing. I read, to quote, "female[s]...loudly proclaiming how disgusting yaoi and yuri is, and how uncomfortable it makes them feel", nothing about putting it in places where it may not be on topic, or in signatures, or specifically when making a big deal over it. I read a very generic, blanket statement.

Even so, saying that people who do ANY of that stuff are most likely repressed is still illogical. Many people make a big deal over things that they don't like because they're immature and they want to get their way. People make a big deal over incest, scat, guro, bondage, and so on...does that mean they secretly want to screw their siblings, get poo'd on, get disemboweled or get tied up and whipped?

Re: 64 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-03-27 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that you're comparing yaoi and yuri to the those other squicks is equally illogical.

And I never said that my feelings WERE logical. I understand that they may very not be. It's...just the way I feel.

Re: 64 OP

[identity profile] rejects.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Why? Because they're squicks to you, that means they're different? But yaoi and yuri are a squick to the people who are loud about not liking it.

Point being: people can be very open and loud about not liking something and not secretly be in love with it, no matter what it is. There's more than one reason to be outspoken against something.

Re: 64 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-03-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Assumptions are very annoying.

Only some of those squicks you listed are squicks of mine, but that's not the point. Those quicks are different because they come with a whole bunch of extra baggage: psychological trauma IRL, violence that causes harm, excessive blood/gore. Yes, homosexuality is a taboo in many religions, but it does not have the psychological and physiological implications of the others.

But, even without those reasons, I still think it's comparing apples and oranges.

And, as I've already admitted, I know that my feelings aren't logical. That's the main reason why they're posted in F!S.

Assumptions are annoying?

Then isn't it annoying to assume that any "female fanbrat" who's loudly outspoken against yaoi and yuri is secretly hot for it? :P

(also, just because homosexuality is not a disturbing thing for you, doesn't mean it has no psychological affects. But that's not the topic at hand.)

Re: 64 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-03-28 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
My hypocrisy has nothing to do with you making assumptions about my squicks. (I'll admit it, I am a hypocrite.)

Homosexuality DOES NOT have the same psychological implications of incest, violence and pedophilia. Perhaps for a few people, yes, but not for the majority of Western culture (unless you and I have had vastly different experiences with this culture, which, I'll admit, is entirely possible).

And, I have to say, if somebody is squicked out by homosexuality so much that to them it's tantamount to pedophilia, rape, and violent goring, I do believe that he/she is sexually repressed, or at the very least comes from a sexually repressive background.

I'm sorry but I read nothing in that secret regarding harassing.

I'll admit, that was something I added myself.

I read a very generic, blanket statement.

I'm sorry, but loudly proclaiming something to me implies the above. Someone that simply says "heh, yaoi/yuri isn't my thing." when asked or when the topic comes up, is not loudly proclaiming his/her dislike for it. Now, someone that goes all "ZOMG YAOI/YURI SUCKS, IT'S DISGUSTING, WHY DO YOU DO THAT, OH AND EVERYONE THAT AGREES WITH ME, JOIN MY ANTI-YAOI CLUB!!"? That, at least as far as I'm concerned = loudly proclaiming their dislike for yaoi.

Also, pay attention to the fact that the OP wrote "female fanbrats". That, by itself should have indicated that it isn't directed at every female that dislike yaoi/yuri, no? Unless you consider all females in fandom be fanbrats.

I will agree it's not exactly the most logical of statements though.

Re: 64 OP

[identity profile] rejects.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of numbed to the statement fanbrats, I think, just because everyone has a different definition of what group constitutes fanbrats-- and I've seen some VERY loose definitions.

Now I could understand people exclaiming everywhere they can that they hate yaoi/yuri is annoying, but what if I make a long rant in my personal LJ, behind an LJ cut? That's loud, too, and that distinction wasn't made.

But hey. Secret for a reason, I guess.

Re: 64 OP

[identity profile] rmarques.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
but what if I make a long rant in my personal LJ, behind an LJ cut? That's loud, too, and that distinction wasn't made.

Depends on what the rant is actually about. Annoying yaoi fans? Unrealistic portrayal of gay men in yaoi? How feminine the characters look for something that is meant to be two men having sex? Unrealistic breast sizes and proportions in yuri? The existence of yaoi, yuri and slash in general along with people that like it, and how disgusting it is?

If it's any of the reasons other than the last one, I'd hardly think even the OP would feel like you're repressing something, since, you know, those are actually legitimate complaints, and don't really mean you wouldn't enjoy a story of two men or two women in non-platonic relationship.

Re: 64 OP

[identity profile] akai_senshi.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

I think all of us need to realize that yaoi and yuri=/=homosexuality IRL.

Just because you like or are tolerant of one doesn't necessarily mean you'll like or be tolerant of the other. (For some of the reasons listed above by gay men, and some fangirls hating gay men IRL because they're nowhere near bishie enough for them to schlick over.)
