20 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-03-28 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, a "u" with dakuten equals "v". It's an artificial construction, and one many Japanese speakers can't pronounce well, but the usage of "va" rather than "ba" means that yes, it was a V that was intended.

Also, the name was derived from the Hindu word "Ishvara"; your observation is an interesting one, too, though. (And since it's hard to convey emotion over the interwebs without the help of icons, I meant that seriously and not snidely.)

Just wondering where you found that tidbit? I wasn't aware of that fact, and if it's true it makes more sense for it to be "Ishvar/l". (You know, in comparison to just some word the author made up.)

And, thank you for recognizing my observation. :)

It's nothing the author's stated herself, but if she did make the word up, it would be a pretty big coincidence, considering the meaning of the word (God, in a monotheistic sense) and the religious views of the Ishvaran... Ishvalan... Ishvdklshdskh people. Also, Arakawa seems to do epic research; see also the fact that Amestris was the wife of King Xerxes, who lent his name to the ancient civilization that was destroyed in the FMA mangaverse.

So it's your own observation? Thank you for sharing. It does make good sense.

The word Ishvara is derived from sanskrit, as far as I know. (Which is kind of like the equivalent to some Indian languages what Latin is to some european languages.) Not sure if it's the same in Hindi or a root word. (Protip- Hindu is a religion)

Actually, disregard most of what I just said. I should not be posting when I'm nearly asleep. I didn't make any sense there.
