Aren't we talking about "Sylindher the Sitcom"? I think the connection to hoyay is in the title.

Re: OP29

(Anonymous) 2008-03-28 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
No, I did not mean the word "sitcom". Want another try?

Lol, what? I meant it's a BUDDY COMEDY, not a PORN. When ZQ called it Sylinder, he either wasn't thinking in a hoyay sense or he was and he didn't care. The premise that they joked about was buddy comedy. That was it. Not gay life partners.

Re: OP29

(Anonymous) 2008-03-28 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
My point was that the actors are probably well aware of the way that "Sylindher" and "Mylar" (and other pairing names) are commonly used. Probably just in a vague "they pretend your characters are a gay couple" kind of way, but nevertheless, I assume they know enough about it.

So when they hear the word, from a fan, they might simply assume she is referring to hoyay, even if she isn't.

They joke about it, yeah. And I hope that they won't one day stop joking about it when they realize that to many people, it's more than a joke.

I have no idea what your point is.

Re: OP29

(Anonymous) 2008-03-28 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
The point is that it does not matter that you know what genre and rating the fic has. Mention the word "Sylindher" and you will have people who think you mean gay porn.

Still too hard to understand?

Re: OP29

[identity profile] granny-apple.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
THEY MADE THE NAME THEMSELVES WHEN JOKING ABOUT A NON-GAY SITCOM IDEA.

Re: OP29

(Anonymous) 2008-03-28 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
The term "Sylindher" existed well before they mentioned it, and it has had a hoyay connotation. This is without a doubt they context they learned it from. They are aware of this meaning of the word, and might associate it when they hear it.

Whatever association the name might have, in the context of Sylinder: The Sitcom, it is purely comedic to them. If it isn't, then they know it's gay and do not care. She mentioned only the SITCOM part of it, for a second, as part of a larger discussion on writing.

LYNCH.

Sorry. Didn't know you could read their minds.

I can't read their minds, and I would be very worried that they might misunderstand my use of the word Sylindher.

And... she also asked a Mylar question during the Q&A, didn't she? So on a three days event, bringing fanfiction up twice when talking directly to the actors...? Also taking into account that before the convention, she was considering giving parts of her fanfic to Sendhil?
Excuse me if I find that a little borderline.

Re: OP29

[identity profile] granny-apple.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I thought we were talking about the dinner, not the Q&A. I'm not getting into an argument about something else. As for the reading minds, can you really imagine a scenario where they associate Sylinder with gay character-sex, are uncomfortable with it, but also joke about it in interviews? Yeah, call me Matt Parkman, for I read their minds.

Besides, ZQ looked like he thinking up a name for the sitcom on the spot, not taking a ship name from fandom.

Whatever, I'm bored. Sorry for being bitchy, but, hey, I guess I'm a bitch.

Joking about it briefly themselves and actually *discussing* it with fans are two very, very different things.
Just a thought.

I know you guys are coming in to defend a friend here (since yeah, I do know who secret #29 is about), but really, Zachary Quinto knows that Sylinder and Mylar are shipping terms, meaning a romantic and/or sexual relationship between Mohinder and Sylar. The Merrillwood interview and the Heroes panel at ComicCon pretty much cements this as fact. You can agree or disagree with the secret itself, but I really think you're going out on a limb here to claim that he doesn't know and doesn't use it in that sense and using that as a defense.

Also, I don't think either of them mind that people enjoy imagining Sylar and Mohinder having sex. They laughed about it when asked, yes. That's not what the secret is about, either. The secret is about some fans constantly bringing it to their attention and how that makes some of us (I dare say the majority of us, but what do I know) feel uncomfortable. I love Mylar, you know this, but think about it: if you were doing what you felt was a good, solid job on a TV show, would you want people to constantly only talk about their fantasy sex lives based on your work? Really?

ETA: I hate saying things like this, but I think Heroes fandom is young and apparently grew out of a different culture than slash fandoms used to. There are unspoken rules and lines in fandom. It might seem like a joke, but "rule number one of fandom is no one talks about fandom" is not actually a joke.
