Do most people expect vegetarians to have a story like that? I've never heard of that.

Not these days. Used to be the case that all veggies had this cool story about why they were veggie, but now you got to be vegan or fruitarian in order to score the "cool" points. That is where all the in-your-face stories about lifestyle choices are now.

None of the vegetarians I know do. Unless you count, "I was raised a Jain so it's my religion" or "I wanted to try and eat healthier" or "I don't like the taste/texture of most meats" as a "cool story"... which I don't.
