anarchicq: (SkekNa the SlaveMaster from Dark Crystal)

Yeah, the military thing was a link I posted. The first one.

Okay. My fault then I guess. When I brought up desensitization I literally mentioned a jump scare from a kid's movie and linked to it, which is 2 second of claymation which I figured was well known enough that many people reading this thread would be able to relate to. I also considered Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Neverending Story, and the SAW movies. I figured Large Marge would be a silly example of being freaked out by something, then being able to confront it.

I didn't want to bring up anecdotal data, but, me, personally, two of my favourite movies, sense of personal taste aside, are The Cell and Jacob's Ladder.

When I first saw The Cell, I was in the theatre. I was so anxious, I was jumping at every little thing. I left about 15 minutes into it. But eventually I managed to sit though it, only closing my eyes during a scene involving intestines.

Finally after about a dozen watches, I was able to watch that scene.

In Jacob's Ladder, there's a certain jumpscare that happens in the last 10 minutes of the movie that absolutely always gets me. Finally I was able to anticipate it only this last week.

This is what I meant by desensitization. We all experience it to a point. I'm finally at SAW movie levels but I will never watch A Serbian Film or Human Centipede 2. I can't handle that stuff.

Anyway, it's weird because I think we're more or less in agreement. Media can affect us, make us cry or laugh, but it alone doesn't make sane people hurt other people.

With the possible exception of documentaries.

Kidding, kidding!
