people get defensive about it being for kids and build it up in their heads as being super important because otherwise they can't justify being so into something for kids.

This is actually what I dislike most about SU fandom. It's a kid's show. That's FINE and there's nothing wrong with loving it and fandoming for it. You don't need to try and play it up that it's ~more important~ than that to justify your interest.
