I would think there's plenty of evidence of other kinds of institutions being corrupt too though. What makes the religious ones different? Just that you don't see a need for it while there is a need for things like government? So that other kinds of corruption represent a necessary evil while the corruptions of the church are just evil?

Of course secular institutions can be corrupt, too. But at least they don't have religion. Religious institutions are different BECAUSE they are built on complex bronze age dogma and contradictory holy texts. They are built literally on illogical mysticism and controlling ideas that purport complexity and inaccessibility to the people they control. A secular institution could be corrupt, but not because of mysticism and claims of supernatural.
