I think there's something about slashing straight guys that has quite a different vibe than shipping gay guys, tbh. I don't know what exactly the difference is, but the difference definitely exists.

Well if they're already openly gay it cuts out entire genres of fic like discovering gay attraction or awkward first times, so yeah

Well, not if the characters are gay, but not a canon couple. It is possible for a character to be gay and single, you know.

There's still something different about shipping canonically gay male characters with other canonically gay main characters, regardless of whether they are a canon couple or not. It still doesn't feel the same as slashing characters who never show any onscreen same-sex attraction or behavior.

duh it's possible for a character to be gay and single but there are massive amounts of fic in every fandom where one nominally straight character is confused about their gay feelings for another et cetera. like, that particular trope is hugely hugely popular along with the straight-with-one-exception because the other character is Special trope. and characters being canonly openly gay and okay with that makes that fic ooc, and those tropes are what draw a lot of people to slash

See, I think I actually prefer canon ships. It's just they're so rare.

Who says that the gay characters have to be a canon couple though?

No-one (I don't actually know this series), but one would assume that by default the straight ones are *not*.
