Anon: I find myself oddly nostalgic for script!fic.

*crickets chirp*

Anon: Not everything about them! Most of them were rife with bad punctuation, worse characterization, and “Teh Randomness.”

F!S User #1: Hear, hear.

F!S User #2: They were a plague on fandom. *nods sagely*

F!S User #3: Let me tell you my thoughts on yaoi!

Anon: This is neither the time nor the place. *shoves F!S User #3 aside* Some of the conventions like the ones I’m using here were pretty stupid, but they were lots of fun when I was a kid.

F!S Users #1 & 2: *skeptical looks*

Anon: The coolest part was reading them aloud with my friends as if they were radio plays. Practicing how to express tone, creating sound effects—

F!S User #2: Figuring out how to convey a sage nod or skeptical look without altering the dialogue?

Anon: Yes, exactly. And maybe I don’t want to read about Angelus on a sugar high or Kuwabara snickering when Kurama offers Hiei a lemon pie. But as much as I enjoy podfic, I’d love to see more fanworks intended to be performed, not read silently.

F!S User #1: Wouldn’t that take a lot of effort? And wouldn’t that reveal a lot of flaws in writing, like absurdly complicated dialog or giving every character the same voice?

Anon: It absolutely would. But wouldn’t it be awesome to pull off even half decently?

F!S User #2: You sound like you’re thinking of trying this out yourself.

Anon: Maybe one day, pal. Maybe one day…

A/N: I don’t own anybody but Anon. Don’t sue! Don’t like, don’t read! And last but not least…don’t forget to review! ^_~

Anon says: YES! I miss these, too! I love all the details you put into this secret as well ^_~

This secret makes me nostalgic, but I'm still glad this format died. I've always found it incredibly annoying to read through if I'm not actually reading a script.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
god you must be old.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
When did this trend die out anyway?

"F!S User #1: Wouldn’t that take a lot of effort? And wouldn’t that reveal a lot of flaws in writing, like absurdly complicated dialog or giving every character the same voice?"

Well... you pointed out the issue I had with the dialogue in your secret.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Flashbacks, man. I don't like them.

I liked them too. But I generally like dialogue-heavy works and am not fond of excessive description. Script-style writing has its place. It can be really enjoyable.

I have a soft spot in my heart for all the "lemon" innuendo.

I've been tempted to get a bunch of my friends together to see if they'd like to read some of my terrible, script-style fanfictions together as podcasts. I know some people aren't too keen on making fun of ten-year-olds, but it's totally fine if I'm making fun of my ten year old self, right?

Aw, this gives me huge nostalgic feelings. My best friend and I did this for each others' birthdays- crack mashups of our OCs and characters from our fandoms at the time, all in script format. We only shared it with each other though, and I think I wouldn't have liked that format as a regular fic style.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well screw everyone else. Your secret made me laugh, OP and I enjoyed reading it and I agree.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
it never even occured to me to read such fics aloud. I've nothing against this style - it's perfect for crack fic.
What I don't like is RP made into fic. Not sure why...

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Those were simpler times. *sheds a tear* I miss them a little.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you. I still fondly remember the OZ message boards from back in the Gundam Wing days... or how I would use fluffy genfic of the script-sort as material for my study group in tenth grade.

Related: I loved those Harry Potter sporkings on LJ where Harry, Ron and Hermione would occasionally do this *facepalm headdesk ... somethingsomething* in unison after a particularly egregiously bad plot point in a fic.

Also, there were some fun parody scriptfics I liked way back in the day. Too bad I didn't save them :|

You're a cute anon.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I can get this. I really enjoy writing dialogue, and can find it awkward finding the exact words to describe certain actions despite how easily I can imagine them. But it's not something I ever liked to read from other people, so I don't think they want to read my stuff without a linking narrative.

I still write excessively talky porn though. oops.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ignore all the Negative Nancys up thread, OP, this a cute secret. Thank you for the warm nostalgia feels.

Awww, this secret is really cute. <3

Dear anon: I cannot recall the last time a secret made me literally laugh out loud more than once.

Thank you.
