(Anonymous) 2016-06-26 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)Is this like how it was recently discovered that humans and Neanderthals used to mate and therefore a bunch of people throughout the globe are like 1% Neanderthal but none of the scientists know if this makes a difference or not? Are elves secretly Neanderthals?

Reading difficulty:
The Hobbit - easy mode
LotR - normal mode
The Silmarillion - BULLET HELL

(Anonymous) 2016-06-27 01:37 am (UTC)(link)Also, I would say that if you do ever decide you want to power through it, just accept that you will probably have no idea what's going on for the first 1/3rd of the book. The first 1/3rd is WAY easier to understand if you shrug through it the first time around and then later go back to it after finishing reading the entire thing.
The problem with the Silmarillion is that it was never designed or framed as a cohesive narrative - it was just a collection of worldbuilding and backstories Tolkien accumulated over the course of decades, which his son later attempted to organize into a semi-chronological order.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-27 05:27 am (UTC)(link)the fact that fiction can make complicated RL concepts easier to understand and digest is one of the greatest things about it

The other thing, it makes me think is the version for my RP-verse. It gets complicated very quickly when you get to Maglor's daughter - she married (the totally NOT DEAD) Eluréd. What does that end up with? 1/16th Maia, 1/8 Human, 2.5/8 Sindar, 1/4 Ñoldor, and 1/4 Silmaril.
And that is not even touching the complexity of Elenaria marrying two guys, one of whom is half-dwarf.
