This is more a question about a story idea I have. Do people like stories with tone shifts? Like, fluffy one bit and then dark?

I want to write this fic with various moments of Celebrimbor's life. Starting out in the forge with his father and grandfather, a few childhood moments, then him with Annatar, then a torture thing. Basically I want to take this idea of teaching children: his father teaching him, then him wanting to teach someone, then that child getting tortured by Sauron to try to get to Celebrimbor.

But I'm not sure how comfortable readers are with complete tone shifts in fics. I know I enjoy them when done right, but I don't know how others feel.

I think that if it's done well, people like it. I usually tend to write like that - sometimes dark bits, sometimes humorous bits, sometimes darkish humor, and the responses have overall been favorable.
The issue really is pulling them off, imo. You want to use each emotion to enhance the others, rather than cause whiplash.

Sounds like, basically, you're writing about someone's life, which can be both fluffy and dark. I would say it sounds fine, to me.

Post as chapters, or seperate entries in a series

I've got a fic that consists of several mostly self-contained entries about the same set of characters, set in sequence over a period of ~two years. Several of these scenes are shippy and explicit (although varying in tone), and a couple others are friendship-related/not explicit.

I consider the arc to be one story. But do I post it as one long story, with each segment as a chapter, or do I create a "series" where each is posted as an individual story? I feel like I'd get more hits/attention if it's a series, and that that's the way more typically taken by other authors in the fandom. Maybe it's that I haven't written fic in many years, but back then it was all about chapters.

Advice?

People like both. If the entries are really very separate (i.e: part one takes place when they first met, part two two years later, etc.) then do it as a series. If it's fairly chronological, do it as chapters. A series with a lot of parts is fine, but tons of people are just as excited about a multi-chaptered fic with lots of chapters.
