Re: Characters or ships you love that you dislike common fan interpretations of them?

IDK why people write so many Tolkien canon het pairings as so fucking boring. Sure, they're usually technically not OOC because we don't get enough information to definitively rule out the boring interpretation, but...like...????

How does pairing a PTSD-riddled veteran turned homeless vegetarian hippie who talks to animals, and a spoiled hippie half-angel princess who one time canonically just strolled into the Big Bad evil overlord's lair, started hitting on him, and then asked him for a job interview and started dropping the freshest rhymes of the First Age until he fainted from sensory overload wind up being dismissed as a cliche boring snorefest??????

And that's just ONE example.

Okay this is officially the best description of Beren and Luthien I've ever heard.

Such a great description of Beren/Luthien. And I wish there were more good fics of them. I've found some great ones of Celeborn/Galadriel. But so far I haven't found much in the way of good Beren/Luthien fics.

Yeah, the only canon het Tolkien pairing that I see written interestingly more than once in a blue moon is Faramir/Eowyn, who usually get their culture-clash treated pretty well. All others seem to routinely go down the tubes of automatically assuming that the woman is some boring sweet submissive bland respectable perfect wife based on zero evidence, while the man gets a ton of interesting thoughtful fanon personality development based on zero evidence. (And these pairings are usually just competition and/or angst-fodder in fics that are actually about male character/some other male character.)

Aredhel-centric stories can be very interesting, if often dark. Galadriel gets some interesting portrayals as well, despite Tolkien's attempts to whitewash her past.

Ehhhhh I find that a lot of the supposedly "more interesting" Galadriel portrayals go way too far in the other direction and wind up just as boring as the whitewashed version (read: it makes no fucking sense in any universe for Galadriel to be a kinslayer, and even if it did, it's boring and cheap and not remotely as interesting as her being a willing part of the rebellion, suppressing the voice in her head saying "uhhhhh this plan is getting really fucked up, maybe you should get out while you can" after the kinslaying, and going to Middle Earth anyway in her hunger for knowledge and power even though she was against the kinslaying, and struggling fruitlessly against fate to turn the escapade into a success while everything inevitably unravels around her.)

Well I wasn't specifically advocating kinslayer!Galadriel, but your complaint was that female characters were often bland, submissive wives, and obviously many Galadriel fics subvert that. I particularly like stories focused on her mentorship with Melian in Doriath.

ETA: To add to this, she doesn't have to be a kinslayer, just perhaps portrayed as more complicit in the entire Noldor enterprise. Perhaps she was more outspoken in supporting the Leave campaign (lol). She certainly didn't side with her father when he broke off -- if she had done this more for her own desires than for the purpose of staying with her brothers, that would certainly paint the character in a different light. This would be enough to create tensions with the Doriath characters she later interacts with.

I always thought Faramir/Eowyn=political marriage.
