Can you enjoy a well-written fic about your ships that involves cheating, if it's done well? Or is it a major squick for you?

And, do you react differently to a) one half of your ship is cheating on a third-party love interest with the other half, versus b) one half of your ship cheats on the other half with a third-party love interest?

I don't mind b) if the writer manages to convince me that the situation and context is enough to make it in-character for the cheater. But I really, really, really can't stand a) no matter the context.

It would depend on how it's done? cheating is not a squick, but usually an assho-y thing to do, and I don't really like my OTP's being assholes o each other.

Intra-OTP cheating is actually a BIG kink for me, I fucking love it, but I'm very picky about how it's written so I don't get to enjoy it very often.

I generally really don't like it when the OTP are cheating on a third party with each other. That makes them the bad guys, for me, and seriously depletes my sympathy for and investment in them and their relationship. I've only encountered two or three examples of fics where I enjoyed it.

No. I can't stand it.

1.) Yeah. It's not something I'd probably read regularly, no, but if the story handles the struggle and complications of the situation realistically enough, I think it can be an interesting experiment to see how the characters would handle such a situation if it came up. I don't condone cheating in real life, of course, and I wouldn't be keen on seeing any pairings I like get together that way in the source material itself.

But in fanfic, I think it can be an interesting way to explore another potential facet of a character-someone who you wouldn't expect to cheat, what would cause them to suddenly do so? Somebody who's known to be a bit of a player is the one being cheated on instead? How would that affect them? And so on and so forth.

2.) I would generally be more likely to read a story where one half of the pairing is cheating with the other half, instead of on them, mainly because my focus would be on the pairing I like either potentially getting together, even if it's under less than ideal circumstances, or struggling with the idea of ever doing so if they're feeling guilt over the affair.

But if a well-written story handles one half of a pairing I like cheating on the other half, at the very least I'd check it out out of sheer curiosity.

Multishipper, so who is cheating on who isn't that important. It's not a squick. The cheating isn't something to put up with if it's well-written, it is the kink. What I like is:

Character A cheating on Character B, and getting off on it (specifically, the cheating/deception part).

or

Character A is cheating on Character B, Character B walks in on it, beats up the cheater and brutally rapes the fuck out of Character A.

Ohhhhh yes I LOVE the second one, huge guilty pleasure in darkfic, but only for certain pairings. If it's too OOC it doesn't do it for me. The characters involved have to have at least a hint of darkness or dysfunctionality about them in order for me to roll with it.

Nope, I'm not even sure I can envision a way that I'd be okay with it, I'm just not a fan of infidelity at all.

I'm in RPF, so it's kind of a given.

No. I hate it. It is a very big squick for me.

Depends on how it's written. Unless there are extenuating circumstances (eg characters in an arranged marriage who can't leave their spouse and for whom being quietly poly isn't a viable alternative), I tend to find cheaters pretty unsympathetic, and don't really like fics where one half of my OTP is cheating on a third party with the other half of my OTP. Especially if it's a situation where the narrative treats it like they're in the right and the third party is being unreasonable (or worse, homophobic) for being upset if they find out about the cheating.

I'm more likely to like the fic if it's one half of my OTP cheating on the other half, because then the cheating's a lot more likely to be treated like it's the asshole move it is, and the cheater is a lot more likely to be expected, both by the characters and by the narrative itself, to make amends for their behavior somehow.

Like if they characters I'm shipping are assholes and cheating seems like something they would do, then I'm into reading it.

If the characters I'm shipping are actually honorable people most of the time then I hate it.

It doesn't matter what the situation is. Once read a fic where one of my OTP was unhappily married to a character that wasn't even named, had guilt-free sex with other half of OTP, and got a HEA. And even with the cheating effectively neutered, I still couldn't deal with the premise. Cheating is one of my squicks.

Sometimes. Or more like I would want to read those fics, actually enjoy the experience while reading, but would always feel awful afterward. I prefer fics where my fave is cheated on by the character I prefer to ship them with, too.

A minor squick, I won't read it.

I've read a few fics where I was fine with it.

So, eh.

Depends on if I feel the plot is going against the pairing I favour.

Oh, and also how assholeish the side I don't favour is about the whole thing.

I do, but I prefer b) to a).

I also find infidelity repugnant in real life, but I really enjoy reading about it in fiction.
