and this, boys and girls, is why that approach to politics is just really fucking stupid. :(

To the North East of England, where this debacle started, in fairness to them, this is the first time ever their votes have counted. They just don't have the political awareness or experience with voting that is needed to deal with issues like this. It is why internal devolution within England was so needed (and so ignored, I mean if you are a politician do you really want to actually be answerable to your constituents or do you just want a safe seat that lets you get on with taking business deals and lining your own pockets; the area is so tribal they won't vote for the other guys and in the current set up any protest vote for a third party is a non-starter). The people there saw a national direct vote where their votes counted, for the first time ever, and sent a massive anti-establishment vote because it might be their only chance.

America should take note. DO you have a pro-establishment candidate who is getting backing from both sides versus an anti-establishment (or so they say) "maverick" candidate? Mmmm, hmmm?

Changing the oligarchic establishment is important, but it's not the only factor that should be taken into account when voting for something, and furthermore, not all alternatives to a given establishment are necessarily better than the establishment itself.
