Re: Brexit fallout..Tw: racism, xenophobia and general awfulness (but I sort of wanted to talk about

I mean, you know, that's literally true, but you also know what they mean, and taking words literally (instead of understanding them in the light of the complex of associations and connotations and narratives which develop around them) is rarely a useful thing to do in this debate. There is some value to being explicit about what our coded referents mean but it's not exactly a refutation of the point you dig?

In this case, the understandings of "left" and "white" AYRT is using here to some point to some pretty straightforward, non-mysterious ideas about race, class, and sociological groups.

Yeah, but acting like white people can be divided into rich ivory tower whites and poor redneck whites ignores a lot of whites who don't fit in either group. I'm not rich and wouldn't fit with the ivory tower whites but my family is poor white trash without the racism, or at least, not the racism usually associated with rednecks. I was raised to look down on people who treated other people like dirt for being poor or various shades of brown, and it had jack shit to do with liberal elitism. Elite was getting a new outfit for the school year instead of hand me downs. Immigrants aren't taking our jobs, they're just trying to get by like we, immigrants a couple generations removed, are. Racism and xenophobia don't suddenly become okay just because we're on the same rung of the wealth ladder.

That's a very US centric post. It's not the same in Europe.

AYRT--I really hope you're not implying that every poor white person in Europe is automatically a racist xenophobe. Every white person probably picks up on some nasty stereotypes, but I doubt they all embrace them as gospel, just like I doubt every Muslim is a terrorist in waiting or every immigrant is a regressive wife beating rapist. Most people just want to get by okay --have enough to eat, a nice place to live, safe places for their kids to play and go to school. Extremists make that harder for everyone, but they're not the majority.
