Exactly. I personally can never detect any difference in quality between beta'd and unbeta'd fics. The simple truth is that there a just as many crappy betas as there are crappy fic writers.

I've noticed the difference when someone starts a fic without a beta and gets one later or vice versa.

Sometimes the beta does improve things, but sometimes they don't and they may even ruin things.

It's hard to find a good beta. The best betas are technically skilled writers who are familiar with, but not overly invested in, the franchise you're writing for. You need someone to keep you in voice and in character, but you don't want a super fan trying to impose their favorite headcanons and fanons on your writing.
