Well, one interpretation of Snape I like is as a self-loathing lower class halfblood who growing up did everything he could to assimilate into the Slytherin crowd. Getting rid of his accent, trying to catch up in regards to culture etc. But of course, that effort (especially because someone like Lucius Malfoy fits in effortlessly) would always be painfully obvious and it would always be clear that he's a social climber.
