It might just be a small fandom thing more generally. I've been in a couple that were reasonably close-knit communities of say twenty to thirty writers at any given point, and those were always the fandoms where the writers tried their hardest to write quality work. I think larger fandoms (especially gigantic fandoms) are a little more prone to people going "LOL I JSUT WRTIED THIS!," but that could just be me.

I was in a small fandom and, if it had been the only fandom I was participating in, it would have given me an inaccurate picture of what fandom was really like on a large-scale level. Not only did the writers try, but they were actually very supportive of one another, and the BNFs were very friendly.

I'm the commenter above and I ditto all of this so hard. Being in small but active fandoms completely changed my perception of what fandom could be. I love those kinds of fandoms!!
