Is that what they're actually going with? Fuck.

I mean... okay, the new Archie is going with some very different art than the classics, and that's okay. Things evolve. But...what the actual fuck is that supposed to be? It looks so unpolished. Even 1940's Archie always put the focus on bold inking and smooth lines, though you could argue it looked less polished than say, 1980's-90's Archie. God damn.

It's Erica Henderson, who apparently works pretty fast. She's doing a book for Marvel at the same time.

I think it's maybe not the best extract? I googled 'new archie' and looked at the results - https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s6ipmfotaw3ciccm5h7e.png seems to be pretty standard. The new Jughead comics are spikier and more stylised (http://pixel.nymag.com/imgs/daily/vulture/2016/02/08/08-jughead.nocrop.w529.h861.jpg), but eh. Styles change.

It isn't so bad though

You might dislike it, but it actually looks really cool. But maybe the lineart choice isn't the best for what Archie is known for (though the lineart's pretty neat), regardless of whichever character has a turn in the spotlight. Scrolling by really quick you can hardly tell it's Archie comics. The situation in the image doesn't help. They also could have been more creative in how they drew the face.

So the short version, the style's cool but maybe not the best or most creative for Archie.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the style.

My point is the same as yours: it doesn't really fit with the Archie aesthetic. At least the reboot/new run sort of looks like something the old art style might have evolved into on its own;it keeps the smooth lines and emphasis on the lineart rather than on detailing or coloration to make panels come together.

Plus... There is absolutely nothing about that character that looks like Jughead save for the weird hat. It just ain't look right, mang.

nayrt

I adore the art of Fiona Staples (Archie), but it seems to be incredibly time-consuming - she's the solo artist on Saga, and it's got a very patchy schedule. Henderson's art is quick and silly and has a strong emphasis on keeping characters distinct from one another, strong body language, and making sure the female characters don't look over-idealised. She's the solo artist on Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, and it works incredibly well for that. I'm not an established Archie Comics fan - we never really got them in the UK, and we have our own cultural niche which seems to be somewhat equivalent - kids comics with a vaguely eternal appeal, like the Beano, the Dandy, Whizzer, Topper, and prolly a bunch more defunct ones. So I totally get how there's a real emotional tie here, and how style's seen as a more formal and relevant thing than it might be in superhero comics (my only rule is don't ever buy anything drawn by Greg Land, and the rest I can cope with - even Rob Liefeld's a nice person, and his '90s art has a campy retro appeal now) but I'm 100% serious when I say the art on the rebooted Archie line is infinitely more appealing if you're not already totally used to the setting and original style. And they're not making a secret of it - they pad out the page count and inform new readers by reprinting old strips with writers' commentary in the back of each. It's a really great project!

Also the #lipstickincident was the saddest reveal. I was expecting it to have been such a terrible thing, but actually, it was so tiny, and I felt it so deeply. Archie/Betty from here to eternity yo.

I confess I haven't really been following new Archie, though the whole Jughead confirmed ace reveal I thought was really touching and completely in-character. I'm definitely a childhood fan though, considering it was basically one of the only comics I could convince my female friends to read and collect with me lol. And fuck the haters, it had some good moments! Gender roles be damned! (I personally think most hetero guys who are nerds are secretly thrilled if their gf has an Archie collection so they can read it without being judged)

I have always shipped Archie/Betty over Archie/Veronica though... (well, actually I've always thought Betty/Veronica is superior and Archie in his various iterations is kind of a dingus who really only deserves Reggie) so if they do play that up to endgame I would be happy enough with the outcome. I'll probably wind up checking out the first few episodes of Riverdale to see how that pans out, but I'm not sure I have high hopes for it.

sa

I believe the ace reveal was actually well pre-reboot - Archie Comics was getting a lot of kudos for being progressive and sweet well before I picked up an issue. It's certainly kept consistent - Jughead refers to himself as "the kind of hero who doesn't do touching" and rolls his eyes a lot at people's romantic woes in a clearly I-am-not-closeted kind of way. It's fantastic.

It's not part of the adult Archies, is it?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-27 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I am always here for Archie secrets. And who knows, maybe there will be a popularity bump after the Riverdale series premieres.

Holy shit, I didn't know there were other Archie fans out there. It's like realizing I'm not so alone out there anymore. :D

I don't mind the current art style but I do miss the old comic style.
