Ha! I keep forgetting that woodruff isn't hugely known outside of Germany. It's a plant (kinda like a herb) with a very particular taste that gets used to flavour mostly sweets and certain types of alcohol. I think a lot of people who didn't grow up with it might find the taste kind of strange.

Huh. Well, now I'll have to make a note of trying it if I find myself in Germany in the near future. :)

If you want to try it, look for "Waldmeister" flavoured things. It's most commonly sold as syrup for drinks or - one of my favourites- Brause, which is either sold as a sherbet-type powder or in little blocks.
