I fucking love them! But yeah, they can range from awesome to shit, and anywhere inbetween. I know a few people who got into professional acting by taking on lots of fan projects until they got good enough to land official roles. I participated in some, listened to/watched lots of them, and even tried to run one, but it fell apart and it's probably for the best. But they always have held a fond place in my heart, and I think they are just as valid as any other fan expression.
