I'm not on reddit yet, but I'm looking to explore. Are there any particular fan areas that are known for being good or bad, or is it more of a dive in and hope you meet nice people kind of thing?

Thing about Reddit is you need to see it as mini-communities. Some are great and some are shit. It helps to lurk a bit.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Eyebleach/ is cute for example.

There's interesting stuff like this:https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/

https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoXChromosomes/ used to be better but it got more SJW-y over time.

But there's also really horrible places like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/fatpeoplestories/ (unless ou like makjing fun of people).

Look for the main subreddit for the fandom you're into. If that's a good place, great. If not, you can dig a little deeper and I'm sure you'll find other subreddits that are associated with it.

For instance, I really love r/gameofthrones for show discussion and good natured tin-hatting. But I get annoyed at r/asoiaf (my joke is that they have been left without content for so long that the madness has set in).

But yeah, you really have to look at each subreddit as it's own "forum" that just so happens to share a platform with thousands of other ones.

Also one of my favorite subreddits to kill time on when I need a smile is r/AnimalsBeingJerks
