Your icon (with your Kain one in mind) reminds me of one I hate that seems like an anime thing - character turns evil temporarily, probably due to mind-control, feels guilty afterwards and goes to live as a hermit.

Going off to be a hermit doesn't help. It's also one reason why I hate the FF4 sequel.

I hate that one, too, but I also don't think Kain quite fits into it, either. It's well hinted at in all versions of the first game that Kain wasn't a hapless victim as much as a semi-willing participant (even in the EasyType, he had enough of his wits left to tell Rosa not to look at him during the confrontation at Fabul). Because rather than straight-up mind control, Kain had a ton of pent-up bitterness, anger, and resentment toward Cecil that made him easier to manipulate (think Grune and Pumyra in the Thundercats reboot).

So I read the ending not as Kain going off to be a hermit, but going to Mt. Ordeals to complete a holy trial in order to resolve the issues that allowed Zeromus to control him in the first place, because he doesn't think he's safe for Cecil and Rosa to be around until he's sure he won't turn on them again (Zeromus' parting shot about "As long as there is evil in the hearts of men" really got to him, I think).

That said, I didn't like the sequel because the story was all over the damn place. It didn't really tie itself together at all until the very end, and even that was more like an afterthought. It was just sloppily executed all around.
