The entire dynamic between Red and the Wolf is an allegory for the loss of innocence and of virginity. Their entire interplay is a seduction. In the original story, the wolf actually serves food to Red, which turns out to be the flesh of her own grandmother, and then convinces her to take off her clothes and join him in bed. It's quite bloody and dark and sexual in nature.

In addition to what

last_archangel said: Red hood/cap/what you have = maidenhood. It's a coming of Age for LRRH. In the original story, the wolf asks her which path she'll take the path of the pins (linked to chaste debutantes of society) or the path of the needles (linked to hookers of the era). Then, at the end of the story, there's no Huntsman, it's the girl who outwits the wolf and escapes, then gets the help of women who were washing clothes in the river.

In later versions the entire point was changed and made sexist (she needing rescue, scolded down to be an obedient girl, etc).
