I'm of the opinion that Kamina subverts the manly man stereotype in an interesting way and was awesome commentary on that whole phenomenon because he wasn't actually that character. ...of course, then I learned that other people on the internet don't think GL is just one big epic winkwinknudgenudge parody, and now I don't know what to think.

i agree with you here.
about him not being all manlyman, though, too, i think that was a good trait that made him more easy to relate to, especially for Simon. that certain childishness was needed, and i don't think it was a weakness at all. Then, GL was really something else entirely so its impossibly to say. i didn't think anything of it personally, but when you point it out, i see how GL is kind of a parody of all those space opera's and mecha shows. its cool, anyway though.

in general: i don;t know if anyone has thought this too, but i think Gene Starwind from Outlaw Star and Kamina should hang out, because they would seriously get along.

Gurren Lagann is very obviously a parody of the genre, taking it to ridiculous extremes and highlighting all the absurdity. And I'm 9/10ths certain that Yoko's design was a little self-parody on Gainax's part.

At the same time, though it also manages to be one of the most epic and incredible stories of the genre, and actually one of the few stories that I am willing to break down for meaning.

Basically, the writers of TTGL struck gold.

Epic? Parody? Meaning?

Huh, it's becoming harder for me to avoid this series. Might actually have to take a look at this when it gets an R2 release. And for once I'm fairly sure it's a 'when' rather than 'if', given the amount of hype the shows appears to be getting.
